I have a friend who said she went for check-up and was told to stop taking her med's because her counts or below normal so she doesn't need them anymore. This is news to me. Under what circumstance would this happen?

Hello - thanks so much for your post.  I am the moderator for the site and though not medically trained I can try and help answer your questions or at least point you in the right direction.

You really should have your friend check with her doctor again.  I suspect if she has regained normal levels, her physician may feel she no longer needs the medication and might be able to control it with diet and exercise.  But again, she really mucst get that answer from her doctor.

In the meantime, if you'd like to read about lowering cholesterol, you can do so on our Cholesterol Prevention and Treatment section.

All the best, sue

Yes, it can happen and it does happen. I am a victim of an over aggressive medication regiment taking my cholesterol too low.

This summer my lipid panel was--

TC--105  HDL--45  LDL--50.6  TRIGS--47  VLDL--9.4  CHOL/HDL--2.3

The next week I think my TC dropped below 100. I stopped sleeping, went hormonal and became depressed. I got my doctor to agree to stopping the Vytorin (10/10) but we kept the Niaspan (1500mg). I had been on this regiment for several months, but my numbers had never been this low. 3 days after stopping the Vytorin, I was a normal person again. The first time I took Vytorin, my TC dropped 98 points in one month. I had my doctor switch me to Zocor. We switched back trying to raise my HDL above 50. I also had my doctor check my hormone levels, my hormone panel that had shown me post-menopausal for 3 years, now said I was peri-menopausal.

I kept asking everyone if this wasn't too low and their responses was always, "These are great numbers!"  No one could tell me what too low was and I was asking everyone. I was confused, if these numbers were so great, why did I feel like crap. From all my research low cholesterol was a sign of poor health, namely malabsorption problems. I think the medical field has been sold on the evils of cholesterol by the drug companies. They all have been brainwashed with the mantra "Lower is better, lower is better," without knowing what too low is.

Cholesterol is not something evil and to be feared, your body produces it for good reasons. Cholesterol is an essential part of good health. Cholesterol is one of the building blocks for all your hormones, as well as serentonin which governs your mood and sleep. Cholesterol is what bile, that digests the fat in meals, is produced from. The problem with cholesterol comes when you have too much.

My cholesterol level is 85.  The nurse seemed surprised as if this were a great thing.  I have near unbearable depression. I'm starting to link the two together.  How can I raise my cholesterol??

I would definitely say yes to your question. That nurse is out to lunch. I had the same problem with the medical community when I had very low cholesterol. They all marveled at the numbers but could not explain why I felt so bad. No one could tell me what was too low. I feel they all had bought into big pharma mantra, "Lower is better, lower is better."

I would look up the cholesterol number of food. Off the top of my head I would increase your intake of meat and fish. Shrimp is high in cholesterol.

Also go to the doctor and be checked out for the following possible causes of low cholesterol:

  • hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid gland
  • liver disease
  • malabsorption
  • inadequate absorption of nutrients from the intestines
  • malnutrition

After being a victim of very low cholesterol (via statins), I know it can make you very depressed. I suffered from depression, insomnia, went hormonal and had anger issues when my cholesterol was down around 100. These problems all improved when my cholesterol level went up and within days.

One of the signs of high cholesterol is feeling good. Oh, to be so lucky!
