I think it's a little misleading to include margarine in the trans fat category, when in fact, soft margarine doesn't contain trans fats, and is therefore probably better than butter for people who use butter. I switched from soft margarine to butter because I was told that margarine contained trans fats, but it is hydrogentated (stick) margarine that has the trans fats. As a result, my cholesterol went up ( I eat a lot of toast and rice - so it made a difference).

    Dear Terry,

Thanks for responding to my Blog. You raise a valid point. There are some margarines that do not contain trans fats.

I believe there are a lot of people out there who are eating margarine because it has been drilled into them that its heart healthy, even though some varieties do contain trans fats. Personally, I think it's best to opt for a zero trans fat variety of margarine rather than choosing butter.

Thanks bringing this to our attention.

    Best,

    Mel
