I was informed by a doctor in New Delhi, India in 1986 that my high triglycerides in the range of 3000 to 4000 are because of genetic defect. This is attributed to inter-relation marriages prevalent amongst
Sikhs lived on West Pakistan (Punjab). My parents are from Rawalpindi in Pakistan.
My total cholestrol in 1985 was 325 and triglycerides about 3250.
I came to USA in 1988 and got blood test and was told by the doctor in Virginia that my blood is 5th group. Persons of this blood group have higher levels of triglycerides.
Since 1988 I am taking Gemfibrozil 600 mg and Niacin 500 mg twice daily. I take Gemfibrozil half an hour before lunch and dinner. I take Niacin half hour after dinner.
I go for blood test every six to eight months. The total chlestrol is between 200 -225 and triglycerides are 700-900 from time to time.
I take moderate alcohol drink one daily before dinner. For the past one month I have stopped taking alcohol daily but one or two drinks on Saturdays. My food intake is home made food wheat flour bread and Colona oil prepared chicken cooked, vegetabes etc. The food intake quantity is low.
I am 5ft-7inches tall, 66kgms weight. I am now about 58-years. I walk about a mile a day.
Please advise what else I could do to reduce my cholestrol and tryglycerides. Do I have a genetic defect as stated above?
Thanks
