Current total cholesterol of 383, 35 year old with no other health issues

By searching4health Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Hi Everyone.  I've been reading the other posts and was hoping to get some feedback!  My cholesterol is currently 383!  LDL is 306, TRI are 69 and HDL is 63.  I am 35 years old and am 5'9" and weigh 140 lbs.  My family history is ridden with high cholesterol and heart disease. (my father died of a heart attack at age 42).  I was told by the Physicians assistant at my Dr.s office to start taking Simvastatin 20mg.  She said that "diet and exercise just aren't going to work for you".  I have not tried to lower my number with diet and exercise...  Seems like I should try other options before just going on a prescription drug that I will likely be on for the rest of my life.  Does anyone have any experience with no-flush niacin, flax seed oil, or other more natural remedies?  As a side note, my ALP test showed a level of 102 (which is above the normal range), but she said it was safe to start with the statin drugs anyway...  what???  I have 4 kids, the youngest will be 1 year old next week.  Please help!

I have fairly high cholestrol problems, and was told by a Nurse (who had said that her doctors use it) that Policosanol was the "treatment of choice" for them.  I tried it, and within six months my cholestrol had dropped 80 points.  Don't know if it will do the same for you, but surely it's worth a try?

First you should see if you have any evidence of CAD by getting either a carotid imt scan or a coronary calcium scan. You may have no disease at all and not need to be on a statin. Second, no flush niacin does not always raise hdl and lower TGs so try real niacin at 100mg with dinner and titrate slowly upward to as high a dose as you can handle...cholesterol is not the enemy and does not cause the disease. You have to damage your endothelium first. See a lipidologist who is not a statin zombie and who thinks for himself

Please read the book "The 8-Weeks Cholesterol Cure" by Robert

Kowalski. He had managed to live for about 25 years after having had his second bypass-surgery when he was only 41 years old!

His got his first bypass when he was 35 years old!

I also have a strong family history of vascular desease

including heart attack and stroke (father, grandmother). My numbers went down, but not enough.

I really would advice you to follow Kowalskis advice. These deseases can be delayed or stopped. Life style changes can do a lot, but it seams you really should start taking simvastatin.

Best wishes.
