Q: can you calculate fat in cholesterol

Cholesterol is a form of fat......Therefore, would you need to calculate it??

Hi Audrey,

 

I'm not 100% sure I understand your question.

 

Yes, cholesterol is a type of fat.  There are different types of cholesterol, such as LDL (low density lipoprotein) and HDL (high density lipoprotein).  The different types of cholesterol are added together to determine total cholesterol.

 

Total cholesterol = HDL + LDL + VLDL

 

VLDL is usually estimated from triglycerides (VLDL = Triglycerides divided by 5).  Triglycerides are a type of fat.
