Q: Increased triglycerides

I am a healthy 57 yr old female. My triglycerides are between 57-69 last 5 years with total cholesterol between 175-190. I started using a fish oil to lower my cholesterol but by increased HDL(from 75 to 85) also the total chol. went up to 200. I lower the dose of the fish oil and the total chol. changed to 190 and also HDL went down from 85 to 67.I don't eat any fat and don't understand the big change in triglycerides increase. Please explain.

Hi Ala,

Fish oil provides heart healthy omega 3's that boost good cholesterol levels (such as HDL and healthy forms of LDL cholesterol). When HDL cholesterol goes up (which is typically desirable) total cholesterol will go up as well. Triglycerides are impacted more by the sugar and alcohol in your diet.
