Topics:High HDLmarathonheart disease

My mom had build-up so bad when she was 44, they poked a hole in her heart with a basic angioplasy.  Her total cholesterol was high, with an extreme HDL as well.  She has had 2 triple bypasses (1 at 44, 1 at 59).  My doctors have said my fasting HDL is "the best I've ever seen", and I should never worry, birth control and running are the reason for 146 HDL and 106 LDL ratios.  Every lab testing has double and triple tested my HDL results.  I'm an engineer.  I rely on numbers.  But my mom's experience tempers my celebration.

When I run, my heart rate is 185+, which is over max at 10 minute miles.  Age=35, weight=126, height 63 inches, med. bone structure.  I had a sono of my heart at stress, things looked ok.

Plans: Marathon in May, 2009 with 16 weeks training.  2nd Marathon in November, 2009, PHILLY!!!

Hi Jab,

I would agree with your MD that your high HDL is excellent and very protective against heart disease. However, with your mother having similar labs I would recommend you check other indicators of "trouble". Examples would be:

CRP
Fibrinogen
Homocysteine
Lipoprotein(a)
Oxidized LDL

There are not a lot of doctors that routinely check the above labs. With your family history I believe it would be proactive to discuss these labs with your MD. If your results come back within normal levels you'll ease your worries and if a certain lab is elevated there are steps you can take to correct the issue.

All the best,

Just had some labs also...my HDL was 106 and my LDL was 126...244 total....I am also a marathon runner, 46, female and eat very healthy....You need to stay focus the the breakdown not the total from what I have been told.....I do not have any history of heart disease....was your mother also a runner?

This video animation shows how cholesterol behaves in the blood stream. Cholesterol is a soft, fat-like, waxy substance found in the bloodstream and in all your body's cells.
