Q: Every statin that I take makes me itch. Would using magnesium help?

My doctor put me Welchol but I still itch. He says that Welchol can not make me itch.  Has anyone else had a itching problem? Would magnesium help?

Magnesium wouldn't hurt and Omega 3 fatty acids, zinc, B6 and the rest of the B's and vitamin C could help as well as the magnesium. CoQ10 is depleted with statin use and supplementing with it may help reduce muscle and joint pain side effects that may be triggered by statin use. Total dietary/supplement intake of calcium above 1000 mg/day can make it harder for the body to absorb the magnesium so moderate calcium and dairy product use may be helpful to improve magnesium balance and reduce symptoms. I think of itching as a combination problem - not a single nutrient deficincy as the culprit. The inner kernal of pumpkin seeds are rich in zinc and magnesium as well as other trace nutrients. An eighth cup of walnuts per day provides a good amount of omega 3 fats in addition to magnesium and other vitamins and minerals.

Sytrinol is a citrus based supplement that has been found helpful for controlling high cholesterol. However high cholesterol is one of the earliest symptoms of magnesium deficiency so increasing intake of magnesium foods while moderating use of calcium may help the cholesterol level (research on animals in controlled lab settings), anemia, hypertension and elevated insulin are also early problems of magnesium deficiency.
