Q: High HDL and high Triglycerides. What's wrong?

My total cholesterol was 199. My HDL was 102. My LDL was 63. No, I am not getting my numbers swapped. My triglycerides are 168 and my glucose is 96. I am 32 years old, Asian female, 5'4" and 118 pounds. I workout 2-3 times a week and play soccer on the weekends. I also practice yoga about 4-5 times a week. Why are my cholesterol and my triglyceride levels so high and what can I do to lower them?

Hi Jeanine,

Here are the recommendations of the American Heart Association:

Total cholesterol less than 200
HDL cholesterol at least > 40, ideally > 60
LDL cholesterol at least less than 130, ideally less than 100
Triglycerides less than 150

HDL is typically considered the "good" cholesterol and you want it to be high.  However, I recommend discussing a comprehensive lipid panel with your physician that will look more in detail at your cholesterol particle sizes to determine if there is cause for concern.  Also, here is a post I recommend you review for tips to lower your triglycerides:
