Q: Taking pravastatin 40 mg, would this cause swelling and pain in ankles?

I've been on Pravachol for a number of years, but now am taking pravastatin 40 mg. Last year, I was having trouble with my ankles (swelling and pain). Went to an orthopedic doctor who took xrays and said nothing was wrong, maybe I sprained them. I don't remember spraining them. I am still having problems with both ankles (pain and swelling) and find it difficult to walk. Could it be the pravastatin I'm taking?

Hi Diana,

While swelling and pain isn't usually associated with this medication, it is a possible side effect. You may find this link about the side effects associated with pravastatin to be helpful: http://www.healthcentral.com/cholesterol/find-drug-121467-73.html. It sounds like this started awhile after you began taking the medication, so it might not be caused by the pravastatin. However, I would recommend talking to the docotor who prescribed the pravastatin about your concerns. If your physician decides your symptoms are caused by the medication, there are other medications availble to help lower your cholesterol.

Thanks for your question!

I just switched from Lipitor to Pravastatin in March. About a month ago I started having severe swelling of my feet and legs. I know I don't drink enough water, and I drink coffee and diet Pepsi. I stopped the diet pepsi and drank only my normal 2 cups of coffee per day and drank lots of water and some juice. The swelling went down a little for a couple of days and then right back up again. My feet are so swollen that it hurts to point my toes, plus I am having charlie horses and cramps in my legs if I do any walking at all. It is to a point where I don't want to get off the couch. I take blood pressure meds and a diauretic plus potassium chlor. I switched from Lipitor because I had some mild soreness in my hip muscles, but I will take that over this swelling if the Pravastatin is causing this.

My husbands tongue swelled up the size of 2 golf balls had to take him to the hospital where they put a air hose down his throat so he could breathe in case his airway swelled up worse. It's the cholesterol medicine and a sugar shot he takes once a day its called Lantus. If you look on the computer all statins just about cause swelling to the mouth, tongue, lips, feet and legs. They had my husband so much medicines 9 of them after by pass surgery and they all caused swelling until I myself started taking him off them one by one. He's 100% better, I put him back on Crestor and now he swelling back up again, taking him off as we speak. When you take medicines don't just look under side effects look under rare side effects to.

I take simvastatin - 40 Mil. and my ankles stay swollen now.   I have foot/lower leg cramps frequently also.  I was taking 80 miligrams but cut that in half because it is so expensive but I still have these problems.   NEVER had this until I started taking these drugs.  I can't wear any of my summer clothes because its too embarrassing.  I just stay in long pants now.  I HATE THIS SO MUCH.
