Hello norbergrhonda,

That is a high triglyceride level!

While your other number are much more in the normal range, you need to talk to your physician soon about going on a medication like gemfibrozil or fenofibrate.  Also, niacin, which is a vitamin, comes in a prescription strength formulation and can also be taken to lower triglyceride numbers.

Having such a high triglyceride level is concerning because it puts you at a much greater risk of getting pancreatitis, which is a very painful inflamation of your pancreas. The pain of pancreatitis is located at the center of your abdomen, right above your umbilicus (belly button).  You also get fairly severe nausea and vomiting with the disease.  And pancreatitis can have long-lasting complications, like pancreatic pseudocysts among others, which can take a long time to resolve.

You can help your triglyceride levels by eating a low-fat diet, and by eating foods high in dietary fiber, especially green, leafy vegetables.  Stay away from alcohol because it, too, can increase your risk of pancreatitis (and cause an increase in triglycerides).

There are several fairly common genetic diseases that cause your triglyceride levels to be so high.  If the level of triglycerides is well controlled, they do not often affect other organs.

As I said before, you should make an appointment with your doctor soon to discuss ways to lower your triglyceride level!

To your health,

Neil MD

Hi Norbergrhonda,

I second everything Dr. Neil has posted and want to add two additional thoughts.

Be sure to watch your simple sugar intake, which has a direct impact on triglycerides.  By "simple sugars" I'm referring to soda, lemonade, gatorade, candy, baked goods, sweets, etc. that have a high sugar content.  Sugar and alcohol have a greater impact on triglyercides versus saturated fat (although you still need to make sure you follow a low fat diet).

If you're not currently active - start (check with your MD first).  Shoot for at least 30 minutes 3 days a week.

All the best,
