Hello Saunie,

A good question that comes up fairly often.

Moderate amounts of alcohol, 2 drinks per men or 1 drink for women, a day have been shown in number studies to both improve cholesterol numbers and many indicate people that drink these small amounts of alcohol liver longer than those that abstain completely.  Red wine is thought to be even better for your heart due to various natural occurring compounds that come from grapes and the fermenting process.

That being said, it is only these moderate amounts of alcohol that are good for you.  More than 1-2 drinks per day eliminates the benefits of drinking alcohol, and more than about 4 per day greatly increases you risk for liver diseases and heart disease.

If you have ever had a problem with alcohol abuse, have hepititis B, hepititis C or other chronic liver disease, DO NOT START DRINKING!

To your health,

Neil MD
