do fiber products interfer with absoprtion of cholesterol lowering supplements

ELLEN
08/05/09

i take apple pectin 3 grams and 4 grams of beta glucan daily.  i also have gastroparesis, ild diabetes and high cholesterol with a high ct scan score. due to the gastroparesis and the fact that i take supplements throughout the day to control my health issues, i cannot tell how long the fiber stays in my stomach.  so, can the beta glucan and/or the apple pectin be keeping me from absorbing my supplements properly?  i think that as pectin could come from apples and beta glcuan from otameal, i should be able to eat both pectin and beta glucan without fear of malabsorption.  after all, i never heard one shoudl refrain from having apples or oatmeal while taking supplements- what do you think?

Hi Ellen,

A high fiber diet is recommended for individuals with high cholesterol, even when they are taking cholesterol lowering medications.  It's unlikely your pectin adn beta glucan supplements are interfering; however, still worth discussing with your physician.

All the best,
