Antidepressant and weight loss, what's up with this?
I am on an antidepressant/effexor (not because of depression, but OCD.) It is inhibiting my ability to lose weight quickly. Does anyone know the rate it will take to loose weight in comparison to un-medicated people? 1/2 the time -1/4 the time- 3/4 the time?? (see, I am OCD)
I only eat 1200 cal. per day (vitamin FILLED foods only) I do exercise and burn at least 500 calories 4-5 days per week.
It is pathetic that the drug companies do not disclose weight gain as a side effect. It is a danger to one's health when BMI's are too high. This increases chances of all kind's of diseases. I NEVER would have taken effexor... If I had known this side effect.
But anyway, my question....above, can anyone answer it?
I am 37 yrs. old and 5'1" and weigh 147 lbs.
Hi Jen,
Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to your question. Without being on effexor, if you burned 500 calories everyday you'd potentially be on track to lose 1 pound/week. However, some antidepressants actually promote weight gain. So, the 500 calories burned may just be "balancing out" the effects of the medication, so you are maintaining your weight. It's very hard to say how many calories burned are needed to counteract the effects of the medication and how many additional calories you need to burn to promote weight loss.
All the best,
