Q: my doctor just prescribed 40mg of Pravastatin...is this standard? My husband is on 10mg of crestor.

I am concerned that my dosage is too high, as several other people I know, although on different types of cholesterol lowering medications, are only taking 10 mg, and their levels were much higher than mine.  Should I ask my doctor why she recommended such a high dosage, or is this a normal dosage for Pravastatin?  My total cholesterol is 283.  LDL 179 and HDL 87.  I just started taking the medication yesterday.

Hi Beagle 1,

It's likely your physician had a reason for prescribing the prevastatin at 40 mg; however, I recommend you call your physician to discuss the reasons why and also to learn your overall health plan.  Is the 40 mg a long term treatment?  40 mg just initially?  How frequently will your physician be monitoring the effects of the medication?  Make sure you ask all your questions so you are completely aware of the plan.

All the best,
