Q: I am trying to raise my HDL.

I am trying to raise my HDL which dropped to 36 after I went off of Zocor for 2 months. I am taking Niaspan (1000 mg) and Zocor (10 mg). 6 weeks of Niaspan 500 brought it up to 41. 6 weeks of Naispan 750 brought it to 42. I go back in a month for testing and we will see how well the Niaspan 1000 is working.

My HDL hs never been higher than 47 and has actually dropped to 41 after going on statins.  I exercise daily walking my dogs and doing volunteer work. I eat a low cholestrol diet and rarely eat red meat. My total cholestrol when up to 218 after a period of inactivity due to a car accident and my doctor said we needed to get it under control.

I have been researching how to raise it but haven't much information. Lots on other types of cholestrol but not this one.

Hi Reruho,

Two great ways to raise HDL cholesterol is through physical activity and heart healthy fats, such as omega 3 fatty acids.

For activity, aerobic activity will have the greatest impact. When it comes to HDL intensity does not have as great an effect as duration. So walking your dogs is great. The longer the walk, the better.
