Q: Is liver pain usually associated with taking Crestor?

My doctor recently started me on 10mg Crestor once a day.  Within a couple of days I noticed liver pain - I like to drink beer on the weekends and stop taking it on weekends knowing that I would be drinking some beer. The liver pain goes away when I stop taking Crestor on weekends, and when I start taking it regularly again on Monday, the liver pain is back.  Is this something I should be concerned about?  I never had any liver pain previously, for any reason.  My liver enzymes were normal.  My cholesterol is high, but that is why he started me on Crestor.

Hi KarenSki,

The pain you are feeling isn't typical and I encourage you to discuss with your phsyician.  Be sure to mention you do not have the pain when you stop taking the medication.

Any dosage greater than 10mg of any cholesterol meds. gives me intense back pain.  Crestor for me seems to be the worse offender.  I was able to tolerate 10mg of Lipitor, but when my doctor put me on 40mg my back pain appeared.  This Crestor is only 5mg and I am still getting the pain.  I told my doctor about the pain and he suggested I take CoQ10 200mg with the Crestor....didn't help.  I think it is more common than most people realize.

I've been taking Crestor every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.  It's only a 5 mg dosage, but every now and then I get liver pain.  Last night was one of those nights.  It's on the right side of my abdomen, and it really hurts.  It's a feeling similar to someone kicking me in the upper abdomen.  It's a very uncomfortable feeling.  I mentioned this to my doctor and told him the times I get the pain are on the days I have taken Crestor.  I'm also taking High Blood Pressure medication, but I take Olmetec 20 mg daily for HBP and it doesn't seem to have any side effect.

My doctor sent me for an ultrasound and an MRI.  The MRI didn't show much of anything but the ultrasound showed a slightly enlarged liver and what looks like a liver injury on the left-lobe of my liver.  I cannot recall ever having my abdomen injured.  The doctor said not to worry about it.  He said he wasn't going to put me through the MRI process that involves dye at this point.  However, the pain I felt last night makes me wonder if the Crestor is causing these problems because I never had any pain in my right abdomen before taking Crestor.  I have gained weight - maybe it's weight, but I thought I'd mention this in case anyone else is in the same boat.
