Q: Understanding High Flags on my Blood Work

I just had a full panel of blood work run and I recieved high results for ALT (SGPT) (65), Total Cholesterol (221), Triglycerides (152) and LDL Cholesterol (150). The only medication I take is phentermine for weight loss, I also drink liquor two to three times a week. Next week I meet with my doctor (seems like a long time) and am very concerened with the test results. All my other results came back within a normal range. Are these results serious at this time?

Thanks for any imput.

Hi Worried Sick,

I'll address your lipid panel results here.

Total cholesterol = 221

This is slightly elevated.  Total cholesterol ideally should be below 200.

LDL Cholesterol = 150

LDL should be less than 130, ideally less than 100.

Triglycerides = 152

Should be less than 200, ideally less that 150.

There is no need to panic, but use this as motivation for making a few changes to your diet to lower levels, especially LDL cholesterol.  The best way to lower LDL is be replacing saturated and trans fats in your diet with heart healthy unsaturated fats.

Follow a high fiber diet, especially soluble fiber to lower LDL levels.  By including physical activity most days of the week, you will have a positive impact on all aspects of your lipid profile.  Also, if you are overweight, weight loss of even a few pounds will improve your numbers.

All the best,

Did you ever get any answer to your elevated ALT score?  I just had a full blood work and also scored a 60 on my ALT.  I read about it and it pertains to the liver function.  Ideal is 1-39 so I am quite concerned.  My initial web query says that no one makes a fuss unless it is at least twice and often up to four times the highest ideal number.  And yet, I am still concerned.  Any experts out there to weigh in on ALT???
