Cholesterol Medication Side Effects

Topics:Cholesterol Medication Side Effects

My brother who has severe learning difficulties recently had blood tests done to check various things as he has been a controlled epileptic for the last 15-20 years.

His cholesterol levels returned at 11.3.The doctor precribed him Simvastatin 40mg,also assuring me that these meds were epileptic friendly.

After taking the new meds for 5 nights he had 2 seizures within half an hour.

I took him back to the doctor and stopped the medication.

He (touch wood)has returned to normal and no more seizures.

Too much of a co-incidence in my mind that this new medication didn't cause an imbalance somewhere(and very quickly).

Any help with any findings/research on this problem?

                          Many Thanks

Hello Karen

The doctor was right in telling you that siezurs are not a known side effect of Simvastatin. However that is not to say the drug didn't cause the siezures. The key word being 'known.' All people are capable of having individual reactions to drugs due to an infinate number of chemical imbalances in the body. While there is no safe way of ever knowing if the Simvastatin caused the siezures - it may or may not have - I would suggest seeing your doctor and asking if there are any other drugs to help control cholesterol that your brother could try. Remember, life style changes are the most important to cholesterol control, so that would be the first place to go before you decide drugs are a necessity.
