Hi Ashlee,

Your cholesterol is good.  You want total cholesterol to be below 200 mg/dL.  Since you are athletic, it's possible that your good cholesterol (HDL) is nice and high, which will keep you total cholesterol closer to 200 mg/dL.  You would need to check you lab results or speak with your MD to determine your HDL cholesterol level.

All the best,

It's alright for now, but that is just because you are young, have normal genetics, and are not grossly obese (if you are young and not fat it is really hard to get high cholesterol).  It will get worse as you age if you don't eat right and continue exercising.

For longterm heart and artery health you should work on your diet to get these specific numbers:

HDL: 50 + (the higher the better, 70-85 is great, below 40 is really bad)

LDL: <100 (the lowest I've reasonably seen is 70's, but near 100 is damn good)

Triglycerides: ~75 (200 is really bad and probably means you are eating too many carbs and not enough good fats).

This video animation shows how cholesterol behaves in the blood stream. Cholesterol is a soft, fat-like, waxy substance found in the bloodstream and in all your body's cells.
