Fred,   Thanks for your question.  Simvastatin is the generic for Zocor, one of the stronger statin medications available for the treatment of elevated cholestrol levels.  Most statin medications are recommended to be taken in the evening, though Crestor (another statin) can be taken at any time of day.    The drug half-life (how long it lasts in your body) is a factor in determining the best time for taking the drug, and the half life of zocor is five hours.  This coincides with the time of greatest Cholesterol and LDL production by the liver in a fasting state which is early in the morning.  One study monitored LDL (low density lipoprotein levels of Cholesterol) following doses of statin medications.  Lower levels of LDL were observed when these medications were taken in the evening rather than the morning.    Please review our website for tips and suggestions for keeping your cholesterol under control (in addition to your medication).   I hope this has been helpful.   Martin Cane, M.D.
