Q: Cholestrol level after a vegetarian-lowfat diet

I became a vegetarian over 3 years ago, and last year went on the Slim-Fast diet and lost almost 60 pounds.  Surprise, surprise - when I went in to have my cholesteral level checked in November, it was over 300.  Can being on a low-fat diet cause an increase in cholesteral production in the body?  Also, can high cholesteral levels cause feelings of anxiety and "spacey-ness", for lack of a better word.

My doctor convinced me to start a low dosage  medicene, and the levels came down to 200 - but he passed away recently, and I have not seen another doctor to have levels tested again and more medication.

Hi Diane,

Congratulations on the 60 pound weight loss!  That is fantastic!!

I am not aware of a connection between a low-fat diet causing your liver to escalate production of cholesterol.  Eating too little of the healthy fats can cause your HDL ("good" cholesterol) levels to drop.

I strongly encourage you to consult with a new physician about your history and get some labwork done to learn your current cholesterol levels.

All the best,
