Cholesterol range - total is high, other numbers in range

Hello,

I'm a 27 year old female, and I've been told that my total cholesterol is slightly above range (in Canada, age 18-30 years should have total cholesterol under 4.6), but my LDL, HDL and triglycerides are within range. I haven't talked to a Dr. about the numbers, just received the results.

My total is 4.77

LDL 2.18

HDL 2.06

Should I be worried?

Thank you

Hi Honey915,

Let me convert your numbers to mg/dl so I can give you some feedback.

LDL = 2.18 mmol/liter = 85.02 mg/dl

HDL = 2.06 mmol/liter = 80.34 mg/dl

From the numbers you've given, your LDL appears to be great.  You want to be less than 130 mg/dl.  Also, your HDL is excellent.  HDL should be greater than 40 and ideally greater than 60.

If you share your triglyceride level, I'll give you feedback.  Generally, you want your total cholesterol to be less than 5.2 mmol/liter or 200 mg/dl.  So, from this perspective your numbers appear to be good.  However, if you other risk factors for heart disease, your MD may want your numbers to be lower.  It's best to consult with your MD to determine the appropriate goal for you.

All the best,
