Hi Randy,   In order to give you an accurate answer, I'd need to know your cholesterol breakdown (LDL, HDL, and triglycerides), so I could more accurately convert to mg/dl and evaluate your levels.   However, from the nurse's advice, I think it's safe to say that your total cholesterol is elevated and needs to be lowered.  Determining the step that would be most effective, depends on which number is elevated (LDL or triglycerides).   If LDL is high, focus on lowering saturated and trans fats intake, while increasing dietary fiber (especially soluble fiber).   If you struggle with high triglycerides, check out Triglycerides: Why they matter and how to lower them.   You can learn more about a diet to lower cholesterol here.   Your MD is your best resource to fully understand your health, risk, and most effective treatment options.  Don't hesitate to ask questions until you fully understand your situation and the steps you need to take.   All the best,   Lisa Nelson, RD, LN 8 Essential Steps to Lower Cholesterol Naturally
