Q: Is LDL always associated with cholesterol? Or are there also empty LDLs in circulation?

I am trying to determine if LDL is interchangeable with the term LDL-C.  Is LDL always associated with cholesterol?  Or are there empty LDL particles that are not carrying cholesterol in the body?  What is atherogenic...the LDL or the cholesterol or both?

Hi Researcher,

LDL and LDL-C are acronyms for the same thing - Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol. LDL cholesterol carries mostly cholesterol, some protein, and minimal triglycerides throughout your circulation.

LDL cholesterol is commonly referred to as the "bad" cholesterol because it's deposited along artery walls and if it becomes oxidized it will form a plaque eventually leading to blockage of your arteries.  It is "oxidized LDL" that is the risk factor, not cholesterol by itself or LDL alone.
