Should I be on medication?

Topics:Lipitor

I am a 69 year old female, 5.4' and weigh right around 120 lbs. (have not had a weight problem) I exercise moderately, walk a lot and there are no heart health problems in my family.

My current levels are: HDL - 79, LDL - 180, Triglycerade - 64, with a  total level of cholesteral of: 282. This is up from about 1 1/2 years ago by 30 total points.

I have never had really low cholesteral, I remember my first readings were about 210, maybe about 20 years ago or so. My HDL was always high. My blood pressure is and has always been right around my current reading of 112 over 75.

My doctor thinks I should be on Lipitor, but leaves the decision up to me.

Thank you for an answer.

Hi Curious,

I recommend discussing a comprehensive lipid panel with your physician, such as the one offered by Spectra Cell Laboratories.

There are different particle sizes of LDL cholesterol - some "good", some "bad". The only way to know which size particles you have is with a comprehensive lipid panel. This would help you determine if medication is necessary or not.

All the best,
