Hi Mike,
Both niacin and niaspan contain the vitamin niacin. The difference is the dosage. Niaspan is a high dose of niacin.
Studies show that low doses of niacin (~100 mg/d) only slightly raise HDL and do not have an impact on other heart health components, such as LDL and triglycerides. I recommend consulting your physician to determine if the higher dosage contained in niaspan (1000+ mg) is appropriate for your situation.
