Q: I have tried taking Pravastatin two separate times. Both times I ended up with severe depression.

I ended up with severe depression after taking Pravastatin for 1 to 2 weeks.  I have tried taking Pravastatin two separate times, once last winter, and this last month.  I have been taking the anti-depressant Zoloft for 4 to 5 years now.  Is this a common reaction to Pravastatin?  My doctors have never heard of such a thing.  I am 51, female, diabetic, with high cholesterol.

Hi Momathome,

Depression is a potential side effect of Pravastatin, but very rare.  In a long term study only 1 individual had depression as a side effect out of a little over 10,000 participants.
