Hi Ron,
Over-the-counter niacin is the generic form of Niaspan. The manufacturing of Niaspan is regulated as a drug, while niacin is considered a dietary supplement and not as tightly regulated (some may contain significantly higher or lower doses than reported on the label). For this reason, Niaspan may be considered superior, especially if being used to treat a medical condition.

I understand the differences between Immediate Release niacin and Sustained Release niacin. What are the differences between both types of niacin with precription and over the counter niacins?
Is one superior to the other ? Are side effects the same ?
