Q: High cholesterol, now what?

Hi! I was diagnosed with high cholesterol (283/171) and high triglycerides (318) about 3 1/2 weeks ago. My doctor put me on Zocor and told me to change my diet. By the way this is hereditary.

Diet changes consist of no meat unless it ends in "loin", no ground meat, nothing fried (of course), nothing white, no seafood and no dairy.

I have cut out 99% of dairy, I still use a little margarine but would switch to butter if that is better. I have switched to Silk soy milk, it's pretty good.  I have cheated a couple of times. I had a small baked potatoe before I realized I wasn't supposed to, used only a little marg. I binged on peanut butter one night during a pity party for myself, and have had 2 pieces of Texas toast which was slathered in butter and garlic (I didn't do that the store did) on 2 different days.

I eat a lot of Honey Nut Cheerios with no milk most of the time and with Silk for a bowl of cereal but they tend to sooth my sweet tooth.  I also ate a pumpkin pie made with pumpkin I canned and the crust had very little fat in it so I don't know if that is cheating.

I need to know what else I can eat besides the fruits and veggies that are going to grow out my belly button; I'm so confused.  Where can I find a good diet that will keep me full and not wanting to binge on bad things. And, can I have my pumpkin pie? It takes four eggs and two cans of condensed milk for two pies. Should I be eating as much yogurt as I do or none at all?

If my cholesterol goes down with my triglycerides automatically follow or is that a whole different diet?

Please help because I think I am lost in a world of now what!

Thanks,

Barb (Lilysmom)

Overall, it looks like you've taken some very positive steps to lower your cholesterol levels.  I'm confused by why you've cut out dairy products.  Calcium is an important nutrient for heart health and maintaining healthy blood pressure levels.  What's important is limiting high fat dairy, such as whole and 2% milk and high fat cheeses.  However, you don't want to cut out all dairy.  Shoot for 3 servings of dairy daily - low fat milk, low fat yogurt, low fat cheeses.

As far as your pumpkin pie fix.  When it comes to pie, pumpkin is definitely going to be the healthier choose; however, that doesn't mean you should indulge everyday or every week for that matter.  You can enjoy your pumpkin pie, just don't go overboard.  Watch how often and how much you eat.

The changes you've made to improve your total cholesterol levels will help triglycerides also.  You'll learn in the triglyceride article above foods that impact triglycerides more so than total cholesterol.  As you lower triglycerides, your HDL (good) cholesterol should rise, which will be good for your heart health.
