Hi Rose,

Has your mother had a barium swallow study?  If not, discuss her swallow issue with her doctor.  A barium swallow study will show whether or not your mother is aspirating liquids into her lungs and you can be educated on the appropriate thickness (thin, nectar, honey, spoon) to prevent the problem.  It is not uncommon for the elderly to feel like there is something "stuck" in their throat after swallowing and this study can show you exactly what is going on.  (Maybe you're thinking "it's food she has a problem with, not liquids" - even if she's only expressing discomfort swallowing food, there's something going on with the liquids, too!)

Here is a recipe for a "super cereal" that is high calorie/high fat.

¾ cup whole milk

½ cup uncooked hot cereal (oatmeal)

¼ cup brown sugar

1 Tbsp + 2 tsp nondairy creamer

1 Tbsp + 2 tsp nonfat dry milk

¼ cup margarine

2 ½ tsp vanilla

Combine all ingredients and cook per cereal package directions.

All the best,
