Q: Can Zocor cause thinning of the hair?

The dermatologist wants me to stop taking it. I've been taking it for 6 years. I am 68.(female) My doctor says it isn't low enough for me to go off of it. I don't know who to listen to.My doctor also doubled my dose of Pepcid (40 mgs.) Can that be causing my thinning hair?

Hi bjkimm:

Neither Zocor or Pepcid has hair loss listed as a common side effect. This doesn't mean one of the medications may not cause hair loss for yourself. I advise speaking to your pharmacist. He/She would have the most up to date information on these medications. He/She would also be able to review all your medications and see if there may be a drug to drug interaction causing this side effect.

I strongly advise you not stopping any medication without speaking to your physicain and until you get some definate answers on the cause of your hair loss.

Take care,

Tara
