Q: Can Statins cause cramping years after they are discontinued? I have terrible cramps all over body.

In years past I have taken every form of statin that there was on the market. Now I have not taken any for at least two years or longer but I have severe cramping all over my body.  Can this be from the statins still?  The cramping started when I was taking the drugs........I have had all blood levels checked===Dr says ok.  I do take Calcium even tho it is in normal range and he has started me in on Levothyroxin, lowest dosage possible, because my level was on the low side of normal.  I also take 300 mg of CQ10 a day for this.  I am grasping at straws because I hurt so badly from constant muscle spasms........no ALS or any other diseases that cause cramps that tests can find...Thanks for your help....Jill

Jill,

Thanks for your question.

Your present situation is not due to your prior use of statin medication.  These symptoms dissipate fairly quickly after cessation of these drugs.

I assume you potassium level is OK., and that your doctor has check the vascular supply to your arms and legs (by checking your pulses).  Vascular disease can present as muscle cramping, especially with activity like walking or running.

Muscle fatigue from new exercise programs can result in cramps.  Anemia can also be a cause overlooked by doctors.  Another cause is general fatigue and lack of sleep, so be sure to discuss your sleep patterns with your physician - do you have sleep apnea?

If nothing is found, and you need relief, taking a quinine preparation often helps the symptoms.  Be sure to discuss this with your doctor.

Best wishes.
