does omega 3 reduce bad cholesterol in the same way scripts (i.e.lipitor, vytorin, etc.) do
Over 7 years ago began have heart problems, after numerous placements/replacements of stents, ended up having open heart surgery (@ 5 yrs ago). I started off on lipitor (@ 6 yrs ago), a new dr switched me to vytorin (@ a year ago). Due to cost & finances, I haven't taken any medication for my cholesterol. Would taking an Omega-3 supplement help me, in anyway?
Hi Deborah,
No, omega 3's do not work in the same way as cholesterol lowering meds. Supplementing omega 3 fatty acids is beneficial because it improves the balance of omega 3 fatty acids in our diet to the omega 6 fatty acids. High omega 6 fatty acid intake is linked to inflammatory issues/heart disease.
