my total cholesterol is only136 but my HDL is only 25 how do I raise that number?
my dr has me on a cholesterol medication
Hello mary,
Your low HDL number, in the setting of normal total cholesterol is a common problem.
You can consider several options under the guidance of your doctor. One way is to lose weight if you are overweight through exercise; though difficult, I know, try to exercise at least 30 minutes at least four times per week. Try to increase your intake of fiber by eating more vegetables, whole grains, beans, and fruits. Also, omega-3-fatty acids found in fish and nuts can raise HDL. Finally, the vitamin niacin (especially the nicotinic acid form) can be prescribed by your doctor at high doses (much higher that you can eat with a regular diet) to increase your HDL level.
Hope this helps.
To your health,

Let me add one thing which I regret I did not mention in my first post. Medications in the statin class (brand names like Lipitor and Crestor or if generic those that end in -statin) do very little to raise HDL; they only lower LDL (or the bad cholesterol).
