Hi Mary,
There are five key areas when it comes to lowering triglycerides:
1. Limit simple sugars such as soft drinks, candy, and baked goods.
2. Limit alcohol. (Sugar and alcohol impact triglycerides more than saturated fat.)
3. Lose weight and/or maintain a healthy weight. Losing as little as 10% body weight can reduce triglycerides.
4. Choose a low-fat diet (30% or less of total calories from fat).
5. Increase your physical activity to at least 30 minutes 3 or more days each week.
You'll find more details on each of the above steps in this article -
Triglycerides: Why the matter and how to lower them
All the best,
Lisa Nelson, RD, LN
P.S. If you smoke, this is one more reason to quit. Cigarettes elevate triglycerides.
