Hello mary,

Yes, 47 and 57 are definitely low blood sugers.

The absolute most common cause for low blood sugar is taking slightly too much medication for diabetes.   If your daughter takes insulin or medications by mouth for diabetes, she should see her doctor soon to discuss whether or not her treatment is optimized.  Her doctor will likely want to get a hemeglobin A1C to check to see whether her sugar is always low, or, whether this was a one-time occurence.

Low blood sugar is concerning if it is causing symptoms.  For example, if your daughter experienced shakiness, anxiety, heart palpitations, confusion, sweating while her blood suger was low, makes hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) even more concerning.  Note that your daughter can drink juices or eat sugary candy if her blood suger gets too low and if she is symptomatic in the future.  If the symptoms continue with sugar ingestion, she should go to your local ER as soon as possible.

So, essentially, nothing to be terribly worried about right now.  She should see her doctor soon, within a week or two to discuss her treatment especially if her low morning sugars continue, and should absolutely go to the ER if symptoms persist!

Hope this helps.

To your health,

Neil MD
