Q: My husband has type 2 diabetes,lately his blood sugar has been low from the 60,s to the 40's .

He is dizzy,weak and seeing spots.He is also very tired. It has always been high before.never this low. What do I need to do to get this under control? He has been taking glucophage since 2001 when he was diagnosed.

Thanks for your question.  Your husband's sugars are entirely too low.  Though your readings are low, I'm concerned they may be even lower at times when not checked.

 

You need to call his physician right away and advise him/her of the situation.  His medication definitely needs adjusting.  I would also feed him a bit more for the next couple of days. 

 

As to why would his sugars be low?  He may be following a diet lately, and with less calories, his sugar will drop.  If he is exercising more, this will also burn more calories and result in lower sugar levels.  Whatever the cause, his physician will help sort this out.
