Q: Can Zetia cause severe leg pain?

I cannot take Statin drugs because of the leg pain but I thought this would be okay.  I am taking it with Tricor and several other medications for other things.  After three weeks, suddenly I am having severe leg pain.  Could this be the cause of it!   I am baffled.

Please respond.  jeanmannsmith@verizon.net

Jean Smith,

Thanks for your question. Statin drugs are well known to cause muscle and leg pain due to its effect on muscle. In severe cases, there can even be muscle damage which could affect the kidney from byproducts of muscle destruction.

Zetia in some reports has caused back pain, the mechanism unknown. From what I’ve read the above muscle effect known as rhabdomyolyisis does not exist with zetia.

However, tricor does have the possibility of causing muscle pain and potential muscle damage. I would speak with your doctor about this side effect and the possibility that the tricor can be causing this symptom. You will probably require a change in therapy.

Best wishes and feel better.

I cannot say definitively that Zetia caused my back and leg pains.  Coincidentally, they began in the second month of treating my cholesterol with Zetia.  My doctor assured me that the Zetia was not the cause, as did the manufacturer.  I think it is important that you advise the maker of your problem so that they cannot say that they were not aware.

Sadly, the pain has not subsided after discontinuing the drug, and I am very concerned.  I am anxious to know how many others may have had the same "side effect."
