Q: Why does it need to be taken at night

Usually medication has to be taken with food, however there is nothing that says Simvastatin needs to be taken with food, just to be taken at night. Why is this?

Hi Pete,

The body produces most of its cholesterol at night while sleeping, which is why taking statins prior to bed is recommend.  Taking statins prior to bed usually makes the medication most effective at blocking cholesterol production.

My father works late at night and sometimes doesnt go to bed til 4 or 5 in the morning so should he be taking his simvastatin at this time before he goes to sleep or around 10 or 11pm which is the normal time for people to go to sleep?
