My short answer is to increase your physical activity and lose some weight.  If you lost 40 lbs. I bet you would see a positive result.  If you can afford to join a gym and work with personal trainer a couple times a week, you would have a great support system to lose this weight.  You may also need to adjust your diet.  It gets a lot harder to just do anything you want after 40.  Also, I would chagne doctors and find someone who had a more holistic approach to solving your cholesterol problems.
