Hi Cindy,
Since your husband's cholesterol is greater than 240 mg/dl he falls into the high risk category.
Less than 200 mg/dl = desirable
200-239 = Borderline-High Risk
>240 = High Risk
So, yes, this is dangerous and he needs to take steps to lower his cholesterol levels. I recommend you first look at his lipid profile (LDL, HDL, and triglycerides). If you do not understand what the labs mean, read this post Making Sense of Cholesterol Ratios, Lipid Profiles and Your Heart Disease Risk Scores.
After you understand his lab results, go here to learn more about a diet to lower cholesterol. Consult with his MD for the best treatment plan.

Yes, it is possible to lower cholesterol with diet and lifestyle changes. However, I would do so only with his physician involved in the process to monitor his progress. Depending on his level of committment to making dietary changes he can see improvements within 4-6 weeks. Here a link to information:

My husband was just diagnosed with high cholesterol. He doesn't want to take medication, but wants to change his diet. Can you lower cholesterol without medication? THANKS so much!
