Q: Which type of fat do I count?

What type of fat (poly unsaturated, mono unsaturated etc.)  do I add up to get the total of 40-50 recommended grams of fat a day?  Or do I add up the total fat per serving?  And in the total fat, what percentage should be unsaturated, mono unsaturated, etc?

Thanks!

Hi Jen,

Your fat intake should be ~30% of your total calories.  Of this, you want to limit 7% to saturated fat and less than 1% to trans fat.

Example:  1800 calories diet x 30% = 540 calories or 60 grams from fat

This 60 grams would be the total fat on the food label.  Then watch the saturated fat to equal less than 7% of your total daily calories and trans fat to equal less than 1%.

1800 calories x 7% = 126 calories or 14 grams saturated fat

1800 calories x 1% = 18 calories or 2 grams trans fat

All the best,
