I have low overall cholesterol, but due to low HDL levels, my ratio is higher than desired. How can I increase HDL without also increasing LDL? Is it really unhealthy to have low HDL if you also have low LDL?

Hello jkustan_work,
Yes, it is very likely less healthly to have a high LDL:HDL ratio. However, don't worry too much, as there are many different ways to raise your HDL.

You can consider several options under the guidance of your doctor. One way is to lose weight if you are overweight through exercise; though difficult, I know, try to exercise at least 30 minutes at least four times per week. Even if you are not overweight, regular exercise can raise your HDL. Try to increase your intake of fiber by eating more vegetables, whole grains, beans, and fruits. Also, omega-3-fatty acids found in fish and nuts. Also, drinking 1-2 (NO MORE!) glasses of red wine a day - some studies suggest 1-2 alcoholic beverage regardless of the type of alchol - has a measurable benefit in raise HDL and lower LDL.
To your health,
Neil MD
