Q: I am 49 and quit smoking 6 years ago. I had gained 50 lbs. I can't seem to lose the weight.

I believe a lot of it is hormonal. What can I do? I tried the Atkins diet and lost about 20 lbs. When I went on it a 2nd time it didn't work. I am taking Lexapro but I was on that in the past and it didn't make me gain weight. I was going to the gym faithfully 4x per week. Didn't lose anything. I really think it's hormonal but my gynocologist says I don't need any hormones even though I had a hysterectomy 10 years ago. He left my ovaries though and removed everything else. Is there any easy answers for me? My breasts are enormous and I swear they must weight about 20lbs each. I tipped the scale at 200 last week. Yikes! I HATE MYSELF RIGHT NOW. I need a good diet plan that isn't tooooo hard to stick too. I do not eat a lot of cakes or cookies. Chocolate is my downfall though. My best weight is 150. I actually look too skinny at 150.

Hi Sharon,

Congratulations on being smoke free for 6 years! Well done!

Weight loss typically requires a combination of diet and exercise. I recommend having your calorie needs accessed and your diet evaluated to determine where you need to make changes to promote weight loss. Also, get back on track with regular workouts. Be sure ot include strength training to build your muscle mass and boost your metabolism. You may also want to have your thyroid function checked to rule out hypothyroidism.

All the best,
