Why does the lab's report "Cholesterol Reference Range" now include a "low" level limit ?
Since I take a statin, I have my blood tested every 3 months to monitor my cholesterol and liver function. About 9 months ago, the lab changed the total cholesterol reference range from <200mg to 125-200mg on the report. And since my last 3 total cholesterol's readings were about "120", my total cholesterol is now out of range and considered "low"!
My doctor did not have a reason why there is now a low level. Why was the "low" level
added and since my cholesterol is "low" should I be concerned? Thank you.
Ron
Hi Ron,
There is a link between low cholesterol and increased depression/anxiety. Cholesterol is a key component of nerve membranes/receptors and low levels of cholesterol may cause fewer than normal brain receptors for "feel good" neurotransmitter serotonin. It's possible that supplementing your diet with omega 3 fatty acids may alleviate symptoms of depression/anxiety; however, as long as you are not experiencing symptoms I see no reason to be concerned about a low total cholesterol.
All the best,
