Q: trig 79 tc 150 hdl 35 ldl 99 ldl-p 1691 hdl-2 9 lpa(a) 10 I have tried to raise hdl over the years and had no luck. tried nispan and the number went down . Any idea about my risk Dan

I eat a healthy diet and take 2400mg fish oil. I am 5 11 and weight 190 so I am a little overweight. The doc wants to put me on a statin for the high ldl-p number.

Hi Dan,

 

It's good that your doctor is looking "deeper" into your cholesterol levels and not just evaluating the standard. Many individuals never have LDL-P or Lipoprotein(a) evaluated, so that's great you are aware of these levels. LDL-P is a measure of the number of particles transporting cholesterol in your blood stream. A concern is the higher the level the more likely cholesterol is being deposited in vessel walls.

 

LDL-P is looking at the number of particles, but not the size. I recommend discussing whether or not your LDL particules are mostly small, dense LDL with your doctor.
