Hi Deej,

I recommend incorporating more legumes in your diet.  Bags of dried beans are very inexpensive and can make several meals.  Plus, legumes are a great protein and fiber source.  A high dietary fiber diet will help lower your total cholesterol levels.

Not sure how to cook/prepare dried beans?  I use to work for the South Dakota Health Department and we had a recipe book called the Bean Cuisine.  I tried to find a link to an online copy for you, but had no luck.  I recommend visiting your local health department or food and extension office for free resources.  Food and extension offices frequently teach classes so you can learn how to prepare healthy meals on a tight budget.

Osteo-arthritis is not an area I'm an expert in, so I'm not comfortable giving you tips on appropriate activities.  Hopefully, someone here at health central will chime in with suggestions.  Also, discuss with your MD.  He may refer you to a physical therapist where you can learn appropriate activities and have the appointment covered by insurance or Medicare.

All the best,
