Mohd, Thanks for your question. Congratulations on quitting tobacco. In preventing heart disease, you need to minimize the risk factors for this disease: elevated Lipids (fats in the blood), hypertension, excessive weight, smoking, diabetes, and family history. Of course, there little you can do to change your family history, but knowing that heart disease exists and occurred at an early age is very important. When looking at LDL, Cholesterol, and HDL, other risk factors must be taken into consideration when making decisions concerning treatment options. In your situation, you: are a former smoker; have mildly abnormal LDL and Cholesterol; are mildy overweight; and have a strong family history of heart disease. You need to schedule an appointment with your physician who will take your history, perform a physical examination, and then discuss these issues, then decide on the best course of action for you. Please review our website to learn more about cholesterol, LDL, and HDL, and ways tht you can improve them (with and without medication). These include healthy eating and daily exercise. Also, learning more will give you an educational base that will be useful for your visit with your physician. I hope this has been helpful. Martin Cane, M.D. Reply
