Q: Are false high results possible?

I was just told that my bad cholesterol levels are high and was prescribed Lipitor. When my blood was taken though, I had eaten about an hour before hand. Would this have affected the results?  I wasn't told to fast before my appointment, so I ate breakfast.  I have never had a cholesterol problem before, it has always been normal.

Reba,

Thanks for your question.

When cholesterol levels are checked, this should be done in the fasting state for at least 8 hours.  I would repeat your numbers at some point before starting medication.

The other suggestion I have is to follow a low fat, low cholesterol diet.  If on medication, you would be doing this anyway, so start now.  This could positively affect your results.  I would give it about 6 weeks and then have blood work repeated.

Of course, you should discuss this with your doctor who has the final say.  But I'm sure he will work with you on this issue, before committing to long term, expensive therapy.

Best wishes.
